A squad of thirteen (13) players headed to Alice Springs in February to represent Victoria in the Imparja Cup - the national tournament for Indigenous players. Making his fourth trip, Captain David Nelson led a balanced team of youth and experience. The first game against South Australia was staged under lights at Traeger Park. A ground that is noted for low batting scores, Victoria slumped to be all out for 102. In defending such a score the bowling of young players David Giliam (3/21 off 8 overs) and left arm spinner Daniel Atkinson (2/11 off 4 overs), along with some good fielding kept the pressure right on the South Australian batsman who limped to line with two wickets in hand. The second game again had Victoria batting first against the Northern Territory. Anchored by Jamie Coltman's 35 at the top of the order and Nakia Firebrace smashing 32 off 21 balls, Victoria posted a competitive 144. However the bowling of Captain David Nelson (3/19 off 6 overs) and Daniel Atkinson (2/27 off 8 overs) wasn't enough as Victoria went down for the second time by two wickets. Queensland have been far and away the stand out team in this tournament for a number of years and Victoria's young inexperienced team was always going to be under pressure in the last of the preliminary games. Batting first, Victoria was dismissed for 71 and despite the continually improving Daniel Atkinson taking 2/16 off 4.3 overs the Queensland team proved to powerful. Queensland went on to bowl an experienced NSW side out for 90 to easily win the final. |
